Having never done this before, I thought I'd have a go. I brought a clay forcing pot with lid about 18" tall, put it over the rhubarb and left it be. Now the lid has been forced off and the leaves are starting to protrude. The stems don't seem to be very long. Odd question but what next, do I pick the rhubarb, or leave it to grow for a bit.
Looks like the rhubarb is ready to be picked and eaten.
Only force one rhubarb plant per year, ideally you should have three or four plants and force one each year. Forcing takes a lot of energy / life out of the plant.
As there is no sun to replenish the goodness going into the stems it's a bit of a strain so don't pick any more stalks from that plant this year. Cheers, Tony.
Thanks,
I do have a few plants, and a good supply of horse manure, so will give it a good feed later in the year. Having said that I may stick to using the forcing pot for decoration in the garden instead of rhubarb forcing.
Theres no problem with forcing, you just have to know about the plant and its needs. I'd try again next year. Cheers, Tony.
Being a first timer I thought mine looked rather spindly, but having seen Monty's forced rhubarb on GW last night mines fine, and ready to pull.
Just given three crowns of variety 'Champaine' away - surplus to requirements ! Cheers, Tony.
Although having grown rubarb for years, I was a first timer last year forcing a crown and thought it was a poor show but seeing MD's mine was an impressive crop and the same again this year.
Incidently the crown I first forced has come up like a triffid this year with stems nearly an inch thick. I'd advise you to stop picking the one forced earIier than you would normally and pick from your other crowns.
I haven't forced any rhubarb but have already picked some - lovely thick stems over a foot long. It all seems to have happened in the past 2 weeks and now it's rampant!!
