I would love to grow some beans other than green beans , like cannelli beans bollotti beans. I would like some advice like when , type, how big they grow etc are they worth the effort. Many thanks x
You grow borlotti and cannellini beans exactly the same way you grow other beans. True cannellini beans are a bush bean so no height problems; borlotti are usually climbers but I've seen seeds for dwarf varieties here in Italy.
Last year I grew climbing borlotti's - they were really good croppers (still have some in the freezer for adding to soups etc). This year I'll do another row instead of so many french beans as I fiond they don't freeze so well. I've also got some ying-yang beans to try (they were successful in neighbours patch) - they look very pretty!
I saw those, they look fab. They'd look really interesting stored in a glass jar in the kitchen!
lotti, how long did you blanch your french beans for?
Like this Vixx ? ? ?

Forgot to remove the [img] thingy. Cheers, Tony.
That's exactly what I mean Tony. That looks like a proper foodie kitchen with the pestle and mortar in the corner
Last year I grew purple podded French climbing beans "Cosse Violette". They were just as prolific as the green French beans I grew, Cobra, but more beautiful (in my view). This year I'm going to try Barlotto Lingua Di Fuocco which are green with red splotching.
Climbing French beans are more susceptible to frost so don't sow too early. If you start them off indoors you will need to harden them off which can be a bit of a faff, especially as they tend to twine all over the place and might need staking.
Mine looked a bit ropey at first in our cold spring last year but pulled through and produced like the clappers!
I wonder if it was the cold snap that caused your beans to be so prolific annaw ? Cheers, Tony.
