Looking at a pot with some compost in from last year I notice what appears to be little tomato seedlings, probably tigerella. Is there any reason why I cannot grow these on into mature plants? I have a mental block believing that good plants can only come from a shiny new packet.

There are a couple of versions of Tigerella in circulation. One's a hybrid, the other an heirloom. Do you remember what your Tigerella looked like? If you have the hybrid, you'll get something resembling the original. If you have the heirloom, it will grow true to type.
Regardless, growing out "volunteers" to see what you get is part of the fun of growing tomatoes.

I know what you mean. You carefully grow tomatoes from seed indoors giving them huge amounts of TLC and then find that lots of others just pop up in the garden with no help whatsoever from last years compost. I usually pull most of them out but last year I let one grow and it turned into the best tomato plant of the lot. This one was Gardeners Delight.
