If the idea is to detract pests away from my veg is there a specific variety? I have various calendula in the bed already, but am not sure what would be called a true marigold.

I'm not sure what a true marigold is but for the first time I grew Marionetta last year along side toms in the GH and outdoors. Once they started flowering there was no stopping them, I regularly dead headed mine and they were still going strong long after the toms had gone to the GH in the sky.
Not sure if they worked but I didn't have any pests of noteable distruction in the GH but there was a lttle army of spiders in there
I'm growing Naughty Marionetta and Mr Moonlight this year along with Marionetta, if nothing else they do bring alot of low colour into the GH.

I'm afraid I must disagree with this rather sweeping comment!
I grow pot marigolds (Calendula officinalis) around my veg beds and they definitely attract hoverflies and beneficial insects, which then deal with a fair proprortion of the aphids and blackflies we inevitably get. This is companion planting at its best...

Clearence Daily....I used them in my greenhouse for years now, they are very good at keeping white fly and green fly out in my opinion......will people ever learn that what works for one may not work for others.
