I am only just constructing my UPVc greenhouse and wondering how I can put it to good use in the summer time?

Chilli peppers? Cyclamen? What do you grow?

hello gardda,i too have a PE greenhouse bought this year, last year i had a small version,i grew toms, cu`s and peppers and had a lovely crop of each,i grew them in grow bags with the help of some tomato feed,on nice warm days i kept the door open which helped with condensation, this year i will grow the same with the addition of some chillies, ive just come in from the greenhouse and it was 30+ c in there so ive left the door ajar best sauna ive had in a long time, anyway i hope this helps, kind regards Chris

Basil,Cyclamen, Chillies, Toms... it is skin sensitivity that is the main value of the Gh then? The wind chill factor protection and heavy rain protection (once the frosts are over)?

It wouldn't reach 30*c here today in any greenhouse, although Lupins and Salvia are coming up in my mini-.
I have got a south facing alley which only needs to be covered with polythene, possibly a door at either end to stop the wind whistling through, and there I am!

I think I could even lay hot bed coils at fairly low cost all the way along.

Cuc's, chillies, peppers, basil, toms, here I come!(or my better half)

A firm called DIYplas provides polythene of infinite variety and I have selected their low micron polythene for the garden, on order. I have got spare wood from an old garden shed all proofed last year and stored.

    Chris,
On a side topic slightly, the running cost of a hot bed coil for a 30 ' sq alley would be about

10watts per sq ft. so 30 sq ft would cuse 300w or say 1/2 kw,during spring time use. 1kw at present costs 14p inc so 1/2kw is 7p.

Run 24 hours a day in late winter, early spring would cost £1.68 per day, which is an extra on the electricity bill but not crippling. It would have to pay for itself.

It might be worthwhile in terms of extra Cuc' and toms, and earlier chillis?

good morning gardda,i think i will stick to the bubble wrap and the electric heater which is thermastatically controlled, it works for me, i hope you have great success with the coils, well its back to the garden and greenhouse ive got pea`s,runner beans, lettuce and spring onions all showing now just waiting for the toms, french beans, peppers, and cu`s to show and yours truely will be a very happy bunny, i hope you have a great season growing your veg and fruit, kind regards Chris

I'm building my Gh on a low level wall on the south side. Total cost will be about
£90 for a well integrated coilhotbed and housing above, The structure will face due south and be entirely protected from all adverse elements..... £90 will create about 20sq ft. When i need some more, the wall will provide another 20sq ft. at the same cost. And then 240cm x120cm in the same location for commensurate cost. (£180)

The first 20 sq ft has got to earn before i do any more!

If it does, then i shall eventually have UPVC polystyrene entirely coilhotbed Gh of 480x240cm for about £300. (120sq ft)
