Last Easter we moved to a new home with a small rear garden which we have made half of it intoa veg plot, the rest is slabbed with a 6x4 grennhouse on it but there is a very big front lawn. We are attempting to grow early potatos, Runner beans, Sweeds, Leeks & Parsnips & when the potatos have done winter cabbage & cauli's. 2 Toms, 1 cucumber & 2 peppers in the greenhouse. My question is We are going to have alot of grass cuttings compaired to other garden waist will that be ok to make good compost, will it work ok on it's own or do we need to add anything to it because of the amount of
grass cuttings, approx 80% ?
Many Thanks in advance
Keith
For a compost heap you'll need to mix the clipping with an abundance of "brown" materials. Fresh clippings on their own, or out of proportion with "brown" materials, will clump together, hinder aeration, and the heap will finish up smelly.
Here's a good, comprehensive guide to grass clippings and compost heaps:
Agree with Italiophile.
Grass clippings are great for the heap but in moderation only. If you layer the heap properly with a couple of handfulls of clippings mixed in between each layer, then they are great for heating up the heap.
