Hi.
Through my disorganisation, I've not managed to plant my garlic and shallot sets. Is it too late? If not, does anyone have any tips to make up for the lost time please? Thanks
Bit late for garlic, I'd've thought, but shallots should be all right.
I agree with Italophile, a little too late for garlic. Stick them in the fridge for a week and then plant them up anyway though, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
The shallots'll be fine though
Many thanks. I'll crack on with the shallots tonight!
I have just found 20 or so garlic seedlings from last autumn which are a pleasant bonus, but I have had no response from Shallot or Garlic cloves that I planted about a month ago. Absolutely nothing there at all, so the Xmas theory must be a good one. I will check on the shallots, by digging one up to see what is happening. It did not get brilliant soil or full sun, but then they do not desperately need either.
I am actually growing Spring onions very well in the shade of a tree with a watering can for assistance.
Put your garlic in the fridge for a couple of days, they like a cold period. I don't think it's too late, they will probably catch up now it's getting warmer.
You can stagger the shallots so they are not all ready at the same time, and no, it's not too late.
Hi ,I am no expert on growing garlic, but I planted my very first lot of cloves 12 days ago and then after reading some info I thought it must have been too late .
I put a message to this effect on another blog and was given a reply to leave them and they should be o.k. as the writer said he often plants them about this time with great results. I covered mine with an inch of soil and they are now showing about 3 inches of growth already, keep your fingers crossed.
good luck
Don't forget that their are two types of garlic, one you plant in the autumn & the other in spring which may have added to the confusion!
Ooops, I planted both kinds last October. But they all seem to have come up and look ok.
I'm really chuffed as I counted the plants and I've got 53. As we use about one head of garlic a week, I've got enough for a year.
