I have got three rows of potato plants growing on my allotment - when I went to weed them yesteday there were loads of ants just in the one row. Will they cause any damage to the plants/potatos - if so, is there a way of getting rid of them organically (allotment is on an organic site)?

Ants create underground nests and tunnel systems that can stop your plant roots taking up food and water from the soil. they also nip and sting when you're trying to work.

You can either put down proprietary ant poisons to kill them or you can make them mobe elsewhere with a solution of one small bottle of essential oil of cloves (pharmacies and health shops) diluted in 10 litres of water. Stir well and pour over the potatoes. The ants can't stand the smell and move on. You'll have to do it regularly to keep them out of your veggies and away from other precious plants in the garden.
