I have just bought a rhubarb root and would like some advice on when to plant and what are the favourable ground and weather conditions for it to grow??
Plant now while it's dormant. Full sun is best but it will tolerate some shade. Dig deeply and dig in heaps of compost, aged manure, etc, because a rhubarb bed is a bit like an asparagus bed - it's long-term, and you won't get another chance to improve it below the surface for a long time.
Plant so that the crown is just below the soil surface. Not too deep, couple of inches at most. Press the soil down firmly over the roots, less so around the crown. Water very well and keep moist - not wet - throughout the season.
When you see flower shoots, nip them off. Let the plant focus on developing itself.
Half your luck, Stuart, I can't find rhubarb crowns here in Italy for love or money.
And don't pull any sticks this year and only a few next year so that the root can well and truly establish itself.
Thankyou for your helpful tips I will follow them to the letter - sorry I cannot send you a root in the post, Cheers Stuart Jones.
Thanks very much for your help I will be patient. Cheers Stuart jones.
