Whilst most veg plants sold at garden centres are fairly cost effective if you are either new to gardening or only need a few but I had to raise my eyebrows this morning when I saw a tray of spring onions, there were 6 modules to this tray with 1 spring onion seedling in each module, they tray was priced at £2.99

Are these the most expensive 1/2 doz spring onions you are ever going to grow!!!

It is when you consider I paid 60p for around 800 seeds!

    Hi aidanti,
Hope your well and enjoying life,
I can see both sides of the coin here ref the cost of anything that needs heat /compost/manhours and wages tobe paid,

The cost of everything is going up and this will also mean what your asked to pay in the supermarkets for fully grown veg,

But for a little effort and a lot of forsight you can sow seeds and know both how your veg was grown and have plenty into the bargain.

Some of the quicker grown veg from seeds such as raddish/lettuce etc are really good value for money, But always have a look at more than one gardencentre as the prices do change from one centre to an other.

Even buying the sets at £1.00 per 100, after growing them on, the profit would be
    700%. going on supermarket prices.

£1.50 for about 8 spring onions, and you have just grown 100 for a quid.

There mus be a moral to the story, apart from not being any darn good with tomatoes! smiley - laugh

    Hi Gardda,
    A good reply you've given,
We have the same problem here every year ref apples/.pears tom plants and cucum, plants and it's this,

We offer our unwanted plants to the neighbours and they offer the same to us, we all have so many fruit trees and as you walk down the lanes you come across so many apple/pear/ grape /nuts etc etc just hanging over the lane that im amazed the local supermarket ever sells any of the above,

I wish we had more brits here to share the extra tom plants etc.
