Hi all, i planted 3 F1 cucumber seeds 3 weeks ago - two are fine and potted on.
The other one is not looking good, the seed leaves have gone all limp and shriveling up, there is one proper leaf which is still looking ok. No sure what to do / why this has happened - any ideas??
Could be damping off. The mix might have been kept too wet. You can try repotting it and giving it a breather. Depends how far gone it is, really.
All mine has crocked now too, even the one I dubbed Tiny Tim as I thought it would die from the start. He turned out to be the stubborn one and survived the longest. Not sure if it was lack of light or water.
Oh it does sound like that!! Now only one of the three is ok. I have repotted one in better (drier) soil and had to throw the other one away. Is it something that will spread across all my seedlings (in an unheated small greenhouse) or is it that some things are more vulnerable to it??
No, damping off is plant-specific. Or it's specific to the individual container anyway. If the soil is too damp and there's not enough warmth or air circulation to help dry it, the seedling succumbs. It's a fungal problem, basically root rot.
Cucumbers are very prone to stem rot and F1 seed is very expensive. Always try to keep the soil at the base dry. When planting out plunge a pot/half pop/water bottle in and water via that.
That way water gets to the roots but does not hang around near the soil/stem interface
'ahh. Thanks that was useful to know.

Damping off is caused by a fungus or a group of fungi. It is not plant specific and any seedlings can be affected if the conditions are correct and the fungus is present in the soil/compost. It can be a problem particularly in the GH or on a window sill in high temperatures and humidity or when the soil/compost is too wet.
