I have had conflicting advice, one saying nip out top when you have one pod and another saying do it when you have five. What do you do?
No expert, but I thought the tops were pinched out to prevent and/or get rid off black fly. I let mine grow and grow. They got to 6ft in the greenhouse last year and cropped brilliantly.

I tend to tip out when my plants have reached 5 trusses of flowers.
Too often have I gone for that extra truss and lossed out to the blackfly.
But having said that my planting dates might differ from others meaning this fits in with the blackfly life cycle in my area (Huddersfield)
For the record; I have not planted mine out yet!
They are currently only about 2" high at the moment so it will be another couple of weeks yet before I plant out!
This fits in with my planting out dates of end April to mid May
I nip out the growing tip when the first couple of pods are developing in order to promote pod manufacture. I don't get black fly here.
