Good morning to each,im going to take a chance with my Runner Beans and plant them out, they are 6" tall and brought them on in the greenhouse and for the last week have been hardening them off outside,im only 10 days earlier than last year for planting them out,we did have a frost last year and i covered them over with a membrane and suffered no damage, i would be interested to hear what fellow gardeners think,i live in the N/E,kind regards Chris
Go for it.
I normally plant out early then cover with plastic sheeting should it be required. Rather than have the bother of trying to cover when planted with tall bamboo, I plant with three footers and find it easy to protect. When the danger of frost is gone I plant long bamboos against each bean plant.. Cheers, Tony.
I'd wait, but then I'm a coward.
I live in essex & intend to sow them in pots first before planting out, when should I sow them roughly?
I am also in Essex, I sowed mine in pots in March and planted them out (into large pots) over the last couple of weeks. I do have some fleece handy in case we get more frosts, but they had come on so well they really needed to go out.

I planted mine out last year too early and lost them to late frost. I still had time to grow more which were fine. I have just sown mine in cell trays but will now put those out until the time is right. I will keep them until they are at least 30cm .
Mine went out last week...fingers crossed
I'm in bristol and have planted out some stuff already. I have planted out corn beetroot cabage. I sown runner beans about ten days ago and since Sunday they have really shot up. They are now 3 inches! Give it a week and i will plant out. The only problem is i put them in trays not pots! Everyone on the allotment is planting out now they say if there frost and it dies so be it!
In this briiliant weather (here in Berkshire anyway), who can resist planting out!? I planted out my pot grown in the greenhouse runner beans today after hardening them off for the last 10 days or so. I have fleece handy and am keeping an eye on the weather forecasts.A fortnight or so ago I planted out cabbages, cauliflower, sprouting brocolli as well as lettuces. All are doing brilliantly but again, I have the fleece and cloches handy.
Fingers crossed and good luck everyone!

I hardened mine off and they have been in veggie plot for 10 days now. They are around 18 inches tall and happily going up the canes and look bushy and healthy plants. I live in Wales but the seasons to me are around a month ahead now anyway as I said in another discussion on runners. The weather is gorgeous and nights warm so I think April is much more like May now anyway. Maybe it time to start considering adjusting the seed packets
We might get an odd frost but as said I have plenty so I can risk it.

Mine were 4 feet up the canes last May when frost killed them. Its far too early for runner beans to be out in the open ground. I hope frost does not hit them but i would keep some seed ready for a second planting just incase.
Hi my r beans always come up to early even if each year i plant them in trays outside in a propogator ,i have to plant them out about this time ,the other allotment holders say oh dear they will get the frost ,so i cover them with fleece and plant some more seeds just in case ,Guess what for the last 3yrs ive been lucky and had early beans ,yes ive done it again this year and ive got to put them in as they will get to leggy so fingers crossed again ,ive planted some more in trays today just in case .i loose them to the frost ,i must set them later next year but i just get over eager to plant seeds ,good luck ,my allotment is in bedfordshire ,from supershallot
Hi Aldaniti
I sow my beans in 10 cm square pots about 3 weeks before they are due to go out. Our last frost (in Switzerland) is traditionally in mid-may, though it was a lot earlier last year and many people have planted them out already. I will sow mine tomorrow though cos I my plot is a 20 minute cycle away and I'm not planning to rush over there cover them in fleece. Hope that helps.

I would say 1st May.
The Midlands 12th May
Further north the end of May.
Thanks to both of you, I'd forgotten how quickly runner beans in pots can grow!
Will look to sow them next weekend then
Thanks

My Dad who was a gardener all his married life ( he fed a family of 8 ) always set on the 12th of May, by the time they were through the frosts were over.
I dont need them earlier as we are eating peas & broad beans.
