I have tried tumbling tomatos for the first time this year and plants are doing great. I have read you are supposed to put 1 plant per basket. However on a superscrimper program yest I saw lady putting 1 tom and 2 strawberries in one. Has anyone every grown them, had much success, how many did you put in each basket? Give me the tips and dos and don't please.

I'd've thought there would be too much competition for (root) space and nutrition but I've never grown in baskets.

    Hi Sarcass,
I grew "Tumbling Tom" last year and got lots of fruit - unfortunatly they were later caught by blight while I was on holiday.
I planted mine 3 to an old flower bucket which came from a garden center for 25p each. They grew well and we enjoyed the toms.
I have started them off again on the kitchen window sill and will plant them out when they get bigger and danger of frost has passed.
I hasten to add that I am not an expert, just someone who has grown them.
    Good luck with yours.
    Kathy

    Hi Sarcass,
I grew tumbling toms in a basket last year. There will definitely be no room for anything else. One plant fills a basket with branches tumbling over the side.

I bought the plants at a garden centre and the lady there told me how to treat them.
One plant per basket in multi purpose compost
Keep moist as baskets dry out quickly...I watered morning and evening.
As soon as that first tiny little fruit appears start feeding... doesn't matter if you have loads of other flowers with no fruit.

This worked for me. I had loads of tomatoes, they were yummy and I can't wait for this years.

I see Rainjustlearning that you also put another flowering plant in with the toms so as I have large baskets I am thinking maybe I get away with a hanging tom and a hanging begonia for colour mix. I appreciate this is a bag you say you got that took 6 plants tho. I my have a little glance in Wilkinsons. I have bought Miraclegrow grow bags and intend to use the compost from these for my baskets in the hope this gives toms a little help as well as feeding and watering when required.
Thanks folks I will give a go and give feedback - we live and learn smiley - smiley

Hi Sarcass, the plants in the top were Bizzie Lizzie's that I had going spare but they soon vanished undrneath the tumbling tom that sprouted from the top, so it's up to you.

I bought a book called "crops in pots" that has a yellow and a red tumbling tom in the same 35 cm hanging basket along with parsley (and black eyed susans- for decorative effect). It looked very nice in the photo, I am going to try something similar with the seedlings currently on my windowsill
