I bought some of these to try to get a new bed off to an early start whilst waiting for others I'm growing from seed.

I have red baron & a brown onion, swiss chard, beetroot & iceberg & cos lettuce.

There seem to be clusters of an awful lot of them packed tight together in the centre of each module.

Considering the instructions say to plant so many inches apart, should I very gently tease them all apart, trying to get a little root with each or will that just kill them all off!

Or do others just plant the whole module out, in which case what happens to the veg?

I would think that pricking them out as you suggest would be your best option.

Plant the contents of the modules as is and the veg will choke each other. Pricking them out is the solution, but if they're anything more than real babies, the roots are going to be a tangled mess. You'll just have to be as careful as can be. And if they're real babies, they might not be ready to plant out yet.

I have no idea why they're selling beetroot in this form. Beetroot doesn't transplant well at the best of times let alone having to unpick roots.

Good, that is what felt right.

I shall very gently tease them apart, they are a bit of a tangle.

They're not that tiny, but as slugs & the dog seem to make most small things I plant disappear, I think I will put them one per module & grow them on a bit. That way I only need bother planting the ones that survive the de-tangling process!

    Thanks. smiley - smiley
