Cats

  Has anyone tried those plants that are supposed to give off a smell that deters cats from using the garden as a toilet? Do they work and if so how far apart do they need to be to be planted to be effective? I know that I can use powders etc. but I am wary of the effects on wild life. Many thanks.

  I have never heard of these but if you are looking for a natural solution then you could use garlic granules. I have used these in my garden with good results. They have no adverse effect on wildlife

  Hi eastyorksman I tried these plants a couple of years ago and the cats totally ignored them, I found their mess right next to them a couple of times, they weren't even particularly attractive plants, so I should save your money if I were you. Nan x

  Have you tried citrus peal? Cats hate the oils from the peal.

  I have used coleus canina plants with very little success, and the smell of ammonia (like a tower block lift) is quite strong.
  
  What i have used with more success is a product called "Silent Roar" which is pelleted lion's urine (sterilised) that you throw in your flower or veg beds. it is long lasting, survives rainfall and rots into the ground as a fertiliser! I presume the cats think that there's a REALLY REALLY big cat next door!!
  
  What i found was, it didn't stop immediately, but reduced very quickly to nothing, after I'd laid the pellets down. One box lasted around 18 months- but this will obviously depend on the size of your gardens.
  
  you won't find it in many GC's, but the internet has some good deals. Hope this helps
