I planted some dwarf french beans in pots 4 weeks ago which are now up to 3 inches tall, but some have had the leaves chewed away, and some have been cut down to soil level. I planted a second crop 10 days ago which are now just showing through which I would like to save . These were all started under cover but as the weather has been so good, I have been leaving them out 24 hours a day.
Does anyone know the problem and how to cure it? . I would be most grateful.
Thanks
My guess would be slugs. I use the organically approved pellets, but there are loads of other things you could try.
Thanks for reply . I have just put some slug pellets around them, bit too late for the first lot . but hope it saves the second ones. I had previously put out some slug traps, but as yet they don't seem to be working. perhaps they don't like the type of beer I put in them. It was out of date so maybe I will have to buy some fresh beer.

dont waste good beer on slugs!! they dont care whether its in date or not!!
I have only ever found beer traps to be some help, you need dozens all over the garden for it to be effective. The organic slug pellets are far far better. once the plants get a bit bigger they wont be so damaged by slugs but the slugs are loving those juicy freash shoots right now
Thanks for reply. I will maybe have to try both methods. anything and everything to keep the slugs at bay. When I said the beer was out of date , I failed to mention it was 10 years old Boddintons, found in my shed recently.
thanks again
An easy way to put slug pellets round the garden without endangering wildlife is to find a lidded container & cut a hole in the side. Put your slug pellets in the container & they are also safe from rain, just empty it now & again.
Thanks for that tip, 2 Jays I'll give it a go.
I found the culprits this morning . they are some very small yellowish snails who thank goodness have eaten some of the pellets. hopefully my second crop will survive.
I recall googling slug traps when the blighters were munching my Stachys, and apparently a test (possibly on gardeners world) found guinness was the most effective brew. So I've bought generic stout. I think it works, but to be honest the stuff in the traps is so disgusting after 1-2 days I tend to just tip it in the loo and flush it without looking too hard ;p
