I've recently seen a flying insect in numbers next to my allotment I don't think I've seen before. Can anyone help please?
The body is about the size of a large housefly. The wings are golden but not transparent. The body is black and hairy, like a bee. I thought at first it might be a bee fly but it has two long antennae which, when it flies, stand bolt upright. When it flies it does so by bobbing up and down whilst the wings appear to work like a bee's. It does not appear to have any type of proboscis like a hummingbird hawk moth would.
Has anyone got any ideas please as I can't yet find it on any website dealing with insect identification.
Thanks.
Not a cricket. Either way, I'ts got me stumped !
Does it hover? If so, it could be a hover fly, very helpful round the garden. Cheers, Tony.

It could be a hover fly, Muddy. Try this link: and this:
It's a pity you can't get a photo. I'd love to see as I'm intrigued.
