Hi. I'm growing beetroot for the first time and wondered if there are any visible signs to look out for to show that it's ready to be harvested. I read that planting to harvest time is 10 weeks for round types and 18 weeks for long types. I'm not sure which I have. Also, as I bought mine as smallish plug plants, I'm not certain what the timing was between them being planted and my buying them. The leaves are quite tall (about a foot) and healthy/bushy. Is there anything I could look out for to tell me the time is right? Or, perhaps I should just dig one up to check...many thanks.
Use your fingers to just pull some of the surface soil away from the base of the leaves & look at the diameter of the root, I pull mine when they are no bigger than a golf ball but some people leave them until tennis ball size, I find they get woody at that size
Good afternoon Grayfleur, You will find that as the beet grows it grows mainly on top of the ground and is suitable for harvesting from when quite a small ball and stays that way untill it becomes a monster. The thing to do is pick the ones at the size you want and leave the rest to catch up.
The leaves tend to grow quickly to 'catch the sun' and the beet bulb follows.
One point is it is an idea to earth up the beets as the skin above ground dries and looks unhealthy but the beet is perfectly edible once peeled. Cheers, Tony.
Thank you, Toni and Aldiniti, for this useful advice.
