I'm not sure if this will be of interest to anyone, but I use a lot of brown garden string for tying stuff up. Every year I have a constant battle with the sparrows, particularly with cane wigwams held together with string. They spend all day pulling bits of string off to use for nesting and generally destroying whatever was tied together.
This year I suddenly thought about using vaseline. I tied up my cane wigwams and then covered the string in vaseline. So far the sparrows have turned up their noses at it. Just in case you are thinking that I am being a bit hard on the sparrows, I do provide them with a pile of bits and pieces which they can use to make nests.

Koala_girl thanks for the tip......never mind the other poster.
Whatsthemarrow...
The better the twine then the more persistent the birds will be in untying it, I had the same problem and changed to thin wire.
koala girl thanks for the tip
I buy tie wraps / cable ties from auto jumbles. Easy peasy, just pull tight and job's done. Cheers, Tony.
And I use gaffer tape, sometimes called duck tape. It's 2" wide so I tear a short piece into three. Works fine, even on the runner bean frame.

Duct even.
I know I should use something more sturdy, but I like the brown garden string because it blends in with everything and it doesn't matter if I lose any in the garden because it decomposes.
I've always called that tape duck tape and never thought about it! It must be because I'm a bird lover.
Duck tape is duct tape. Originally duct tape, an enterprising manufacturer called their product Duck Tape as a marketing ploy.
One thing I would like to say though is that I disapprove of using vaseline as a bird deterrant where you know that the sparrows are likely to try to get the string.
Sparrows do not need their feathers covered with petroleum jelly.
Fear not, their feathers remain unsmeared. I only put the vaseline on the string, not on the pole. They sit on the cross pole, look at the string in disgust and then fly away again.
