I sowed White Lisbon a couple of weeks ago into modules at the same time as fennel.
The fennel was up in just over a week, but still no sign of the onions.
Should I be worried? They were sown in multipurpose compost with a sprinkling of vermiculite over & are on a sunnyish windowsill, kept moist.
They can take a little while. I sowed some in the ground about 10 days ago and nothing yet.
Ah good, probably nothing to worry about then.
The seed was in date but the packet opened probably a couple of years ago or more. I usually find most old seed absolutely fine still though so still have hope they will germinate yet.
I sowed spring onions in modules in the greenhouse on 21 April and the first ones emerged yesterday 29 April. 10 modules out of 22 so far. Leeks and garlic chives have also germinated in a reasonable time scale.
I think you answered your own question by saying you used seed from an opened packet. Once you open a packet of onion seed I think you have to use them during that year. I'm sure someone will have other experiences though.
I never get through a packet of onion seeds in a season. I've always used opened packets, usually a couple of years old, without any problems. Keep them well sealed.
Yes I did have a quick glance on Google about which veg seeds keep & which don't.
Onions was one of the ones listed as not keeping well, but with an awful lot of comments from people saying they always used ones as much as several year old & never had problems.
The pack was well sealed & in an airtight tin in the cold garage.
I think the only answer then is to give them another week to 10 days maybe & if still nothing give up or sow more from a new packet.
