Planted chitted spuds in container in unheated greenhouse about 6 weeks ago. How can I tell when they are ready to dig up?

Sorry flyingferret (there must be a story in that name), you'll have to wait a bit yet,
first earlies can take 80-100 days, 2nd earlies about 120 days and maincrop 140. Some varieties are faster.
Earlies are usually harvested when they're flowering, but maincrop should have died down, they can be left in the ground till you need them, but in practice they're usually dug up and stored.
I hope this helps.

I have been told not to dig them up until 2 weeks after they've flowered but check this from Google. (Check other Google sites too)
You can begin to harvest potatoes any time after the plants have flowered. Just carefully reach down into the soil of your container and pull out some potatoes.
You can also wait until the plants turn yellow and die back and then harvest all of the potatoes. The easiest way to do this is to turn the container over dump it out into a wheelbarrow or onto a tarp. Then you can freely paw through the soil to find all of the potatoes. You may find some really tiny potatoes - don't chuck them- those can be some of the best and sweetest.
Cook your potatoes or store them and enjoy!
