After looking really healthy and bushy, suddenly many of my beetroot leaves (the outer leaves) appear to be wilting and dying. I still appear to have new leaves coming through. Any idea what the problem might be? Should I just pull off the old leaves? Many thanks.
Have you just thinned them out? I don't think they like being transplanted. Are they too dry? We haven't had much rain lately. Lift a couple and check the roots for predators. Good luck
Thank you, horththit. No, I have not moved them since I first planted them as small plug plants many weeks ago. I have been watering less in recent days (on the advice of a friend -- this is my first year growing veg) -- could this be the problem? If so, I'll revert to daily douses and hope for the best! Many thanks.
If you have new leaves coming, sounds to me like they will make it. It might be the cold winds they don't like. Now it's May, things should improve. Keep watering during dry spells, but also hoeing to break up the surface soil so the roots can breathe.
Thank you! This happened so suddenly -- disappointing when they looked so healthy! Will keep up the watering and add the hoeing, too! Many thanks!
P.S. Would you say it's best to cut off the dead leaves? I can't see how it would do any harm, but I've been wrong before! Thanks.
