Hi all is anyone here having probs with carrots not germinating ? ive just re seeded again im hoping something will happen this time, i had a fab crop last year or could it be the vast change in weather . Many thanks for any thoughts !
How does the weather differ from last year? Carrots need mildly warm soil to germinate, sown about 1/4" deep and kept damp till germination.
I've read that carrot seed doesn't keep from one year to the next once opened, are they last years?
If so that maybe the problem.
I'm having that quandary with old spring onion seed, still in date but previously opened & not yet germinating. Some say onion like carrot keeps, others say it doesn't.....
I'm having the same problem. My first sowing did germinate but were dug up by next doors horrid cats using the seed bed as a latrine. Second and third sowings were no shows. Forth attempt today. Last year I had a fab crop. I do wonder if I'm not keeping the soil damp enough but I am watering every day. If this lot doesn't work, they're going in pots.
About a 1/3 of each row of my F1 Laguna's, from seed pkt opened last year, in raised bed have germinated. An unopened pkt of chantenay carrots from last year in pot have all germinated...could be something in that.
Well, I'm still using carrot seeds from a packet at least three years old with great results. If the packet is sealed properly and kept in the right conditions the seeds should be fine.
