Why isn't my lettuce germinating, I have tried sowing in trays and in the ground and only a couple of seedlings have appeared. Its fresh seed and I water regularly. At least the carrots finally appeared after waiting several weeks. On the other hand I have loads of chickweed appearing amongst the potatoes!
Are the lettuce seeds warm enough? They need temps in the low 20s to germinate happily.
Sorry, this is absolute nonsense, the exact opposite is true. They will not germinate if it is too hot. Keep them shaded until they germinate.
Sorry, but the optimum temperature for lettuce seed germination is around 70 F (21 C). If it's too hot they certainly won't germinate. Ditto too cold.
I have some in my GH in trays (in full sun and in the 20's through the day and 10's at night) and some in my Frozen North garden (Inverness...chilly!) both are romping away with gusto! I think you've been sold some duff seed!
I buy the mixed lettuce seed from the B&Q value range. I think it's 39p per packet and it's never failed me. Healthy, yummy and germinates no bother!
Go cheap! You won't go back!
Just an update - I finally have lettuce seeds germinating. These are outside in full sun and we have temperatures of 18-20 here at the moment.
Congrats! It was probably temperature after all.
