I planted out some mooli about 4 of weeks ago under glass and for the past two weeks they have been uncovered. Much to my surprise the foliage above ground has trippled in height, I wasn't expecting so much growth, how soon can they be harvested and will they have grown just as well underground..
The most reliable way to find out is to pull one up and see.
Having said that if you clear away some soil from the base of the plant this will expose the top of the mooli.
If it is over one inch in diameter there is a good chance it is of a suitable size to harvest.
BTW; Mooli keeps well in the ground, beter than radish so only pick it fresh as you require it,leave the rest to increase in size.
I pushed some of the soil aside this evening and they are about 2cm wide so will leave a little longer.
I think the glass cover for the first two weeks helped them along. It's certainly good to know they will keep in the ground for a while I'm looking forward to trying them for the first time
Teegee...
I'm in need of some further advise. Only a week on and they are starting to produce flower buds. I've taken these off, probably not a good sign though. I pulled one today and the mooli was only about 4inches long.
Q.... They may have bolted, that's if Mooli does bolt
I've sown some more though not wanting to give up just yet, do you have any advise to produce a better crop. I'm hoping what is already in the garden will still be ok.
I always understood that mooli were best grown later in the year - that is, after the longest day. I do this and have never had bolters - maybe they don't like being grown early. But maybe others have had different experiences?
The variety is Diakon and the distruction say sow in spring or late summer/winter, it does prefer cooler weather. I thought it had been sown at the right time but here in Lancashire we had really hot weather over Easter, warmer than anywhere else in Europe!
I've sown some more seeds today but still have lots left, I'm not going to give up so will save the rest for late summer, when would you say that is, September time! When is the longest day.
Hi zoomer
Longest day is supposed to be the 21st of June, so I always delay sowing of things like endive, pak choi, and bolt-susceptible stuff like that until after then
But if the packet says it can be sown in spring, then probably the hot weather will have something to do with the bolting.
Good luck!
I sowed more at the weekend but have plenty of seeds left to try another lot in June then a final one in August possibly. Wishe me luck
Definitely good luck! Please do let us know what happens. I love mooli (so useful in the kitchen) and if it will grow in the spring then I'll definitely try it
