Heya guys. So this is the first year of me trying to grow french beans, and they seem to be doing very well.
I have 10 plants, that i have put around 2 four pronged climbing frame thingies. The variety is "Blue Lake"- they are seedlings i got free from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú with their "Digin" campaign.
I was wondering- is 10 seedlings round 2 frames enough?? As in, around how much produce am i going to get from each plant, providing they continue to climb and grow healthily?
I usually grow about 30-40 "Cobra" plants - a climbing variety - up both sides of a growing frame. They provide tons for two of us and enough to freeze for the winter.
Are yours a dwarf variety or climbers? If climbers, harvest early and often. It will encourage more production. Remember, too, not to let the soil dry out, particularly when they're flowering.
Sorry! "Blue Lake". Climbers. Serves me right for not paying attention. They're a nice variety. I'd also highly recommend "Cobra". Prolific and delicious.
Hi - I 'm growing Blue Lake and Cobra, how tall do they grow? I have 3' - 4' canes and also 6' canes to make tripods but i have runner beans that i want to go on the 6' canes! Do you pinch out the tops to stop them growing too tall? thanks :0)
Cobra will just keep growing. I pinched out the tips of mine last season at about 6 feet.
is it too late to plant more french beans straight out in garden? most of mine which i started inside have not germinated.
Not too late at all. In fact it might be too early depending on your soil temperatures.
