Hi everyone. I planted a lot of garlic last autumn (three different varieties) and I noticed this weekend that the super-huge one (I think it's called elephant garlic) is putting up flower stalks. Does anybody know if I should nip these out now to encourage fat bulbs? In fact I would be grateful for any tips and advice on getting bigger fatter bulbs. Many thanks.....
Trixeytrader, the answer is remove them so the plant's resources concentrate on fattening the bulbs.
A look at the link provided by TeeGee ( a couple of posts down) for the gardeners almanac will steer you in the right direction for all sorts of info.
Good luck.
Thanks jamie01. I'll do them this evening, and thanks also for the pointer to the Gardeners' Almanac link.
Some people leave a few flower buds on the elephant garlic as they are so ornamental, and would be very useful in the back of a flower border, though for max crop, take them off.
To see the flowers and general information on growing elephant garlic, see this page :-
Thanks for that realfood - and for another very useful link.
