    Hello everyone

    I'm so excited! I have just acquired a raised bed (10ft by 3ft) and can't wait to plant lots of stuff - I already have a huge pot of parsley and also some chives and a couple of garlic plants that can go in and of course there'll be rocket and lettuces going in.

    What I'm wondering is, is it too late to plant onions and more garlic? I don't mind waiting for them to reach fruition, but need to know if I've left it too late this year to get them planted.

    I live in central London and the plot is in a sunny sheltered spot. All suggestions gratefully received.

    Many thanks
    MOB

    No to garlic! it needs a spell of hard frost to get it going (i.e. to split)

    Re-onions! It depends what variety you mean.

    Its a bit late for 'maincrop' varieties but spring onions should be OK.

    Have a look at these two links and it might help!

    You might find the alphabetical index and monthly programme here quite useful;

    Hey thanks so much for the advice - I've been reading a bit about this and will leave the garlic now till the autumn.

    I will look at spring onions and any others that can be planted late and fill the gaps with lettuces.....I have feeling we will be eating an awful lot of lettuce this summer.....

    Thanks again,

    The Gardeners' Almanac is excellent - and now in my favourites - thanks very much again for the link, I'm sure it will answer a lot of my queries

    I think it's too late for garlic. You can put some in at the end of the year, to stand through the winter, for harvest next summer - it likes a bit of cold before the growing season. Onions or shallots might come to somtehing, but it' really a bit late for them as well, as they're only going to have about half the time to harvest that they would if they'd gone in in Feb or March.

    Now is not too late for peas or beans - try dwarf or climbing French beans. A courgette or two, if you have room, could be sown now, or buy a young plant if you're impatient. Tomato plants could go in soon too - try a tumbling or bush variety.
