This is my first allotment had it since Feb and going ok , compost bin made and in use, beds dug over onions in , carrots seeds in , parsnips, fruit growing some seedlings growing in green house so feeling good except I didn't plant any potatoes! Now I regret it as I do have space so could i chit some now and just pull them up later than normal? When is the latest i could plant or have I really messed up and missed the boat? Please advise, also if not missed the boat which ones?
Many thanks Taff
I live just outside Cardiff.
buy some first earlies and plant now. Plant spade deep, but space them out so earthing up is easier.
Get them in asap!
It is not essential to chit them, this is just a ploy that is done earlier in the season to get them off to a good start.
Doing it this way means the chitting and growing happens at the same time!
Think of it this way most farmers do not chit their potatoes.
In terms of variety; put in what you can get, 2nd earlies if you can get them.
I grow Kestrel which is a 2nd early and treat it as a maincrop as it is a good all rounder and stores just as well as any maincrop variety does, and best of all ;
It is slug resistant!
Thankyou both , for your replies will source some tomorrow and plant asap !! Very greatfull for all the information.

Homebase are selling off their seed potatoes for 50p. Limited choice. Desiree was one I noticed. Hope this helps.
