I had trouble germinating my chilli and pepper plants this year so purchased about 10 plants a couple of months ago now. They looked very healthy and were put in the back bedroom to grow as it was too cold to put them out. They've suvived thus far and went out into the GH about three weeks ago after spending two weeks self watering in the kitchen whilst I was away.

Initially they appeared to be growing but now when I think about it stopped growing about five weeks ago. When I potted one up last week the roots did not look very healthy infact there was none of the white roots expected and they appeared to have stopped growing at the original pot size. There wasn't any vine weevil in the soil and I can't see anything on the leaves which would suggest any sort of pest attack or fungus. They aren't toppling over either like damping off. They are in the next pot size as I potted them up into grow bag compost shortly after getting them.

Any suggestions as to what is wrong with them and should I throw in the towel and purchase more.

Sounds like they got a bit cold and have 'checked'. They really don't like the temp going below about 10C. They should pick-up, although you might find that new ones, even if smaller when you buy them, will grow quicker. I grown mine in a greenhouse and wouldn't consider putting them outside until June or July.

    I purchased mine from B & Q and Homebase.

I was impatient today, so thinking there was nothing to lose, took one out of it's pot and delved through the roots. There was silver stuff (clearly man made) around the base of the plant and start of the roots with no healthy roots coming from this, the healthy roots are now growing above it which is from the stem of the plant. So I've repotted them all up to their first leaves, taking off as much of the silver stuff as I dare. They may all be dead in the morning, wish me lucksmiley - smiley

Last year Bob I grew mine both in the GH and outisde. The ones in the GH did far better so was sticking with that this year.

It could be the cold, one or two plants have died/blackened were the top shoot is. but have healthy leaves below this, are these still ok and will they produce healthy side shoots of peppers/chillies.

I'd been presuming it was it was just down to the weather.

Both the ones I germinated & a few I bought from the GC as young plants (as I had to go away & wasn't sure mine would survive!), were looking amazing over a week ago. Really put on growth, strong roots at the bottom of the small pots.

So I potted them on & they've really slowed down. There are roots still on their way down when I took one out to look but plant & roots have definitely stopped growing at the rate they were.

I've just put it down to the really hot weather we had weeks ago, followed by the much cooler weather we've had the last couple of weeks.

Particularly the ones bought from the GC must have been forced in heat early on, they then came home to my cold house, then cold greenhouse.
