I planted goosberry, white, red and blackcurrant bushes to fruit this year and as they were newly planted relocated the strawberry patch in their roots.

A tab bit ambitious, the area is only 1ft by 10ft. They've been imaginatively pruned as I had the dilema whether to grow as cordons or bushes due to them competing in the limited space. There are now four bushes after not pruning properly but they have lots of air running through their middles so meldew shouldn't be a problemsmiley - erm. Me thinks I'll relocate two of the bushes next year...

OMG...Anyone thinking of currant bushes take heed and put them in a cage, I haven't and something is already eating the blackcurrants which are bearly green and ever so tiny. It's had green fly and today I found my first butterfly eggssmiley - doh

On a positive note the pests seem to be taking one bush at a time, the red, white currants and gooseberry bush remain pest free. Infact the gooseberry is looking to produce a good bowl full of fruit.

The ground was given a good dose of horse muck prior to planting and the strawberries due to the warm weather are all in flower, much earlier than last year.

I'm pleased with the results anyone else have similar experiences....

I think most soft fruit is tough as old boots and will stand a lot of neglect / overcrowding without coming to much harm. I spent last winter planting cordons I had grown from cuttings from old currant and gooseberry bushes. Not done expertly but they have all survived and are covered in smalll fruit now. The only one that died was a red gooseberry I had bought from a nursery. So advice to anyone is just have a go.
