I know when I first mentioned that i had just bought a large veg trug, a few people had expressed an interest in knowing how well I had got on with it, well today marks the 5th week since sowing seeds directly into it, its quite a large trug 6ft ish x 2 1/2ft & I have adopted the square foot growing method, the bed has been divided into 12 roughly 12" x 12" squares,

Beetroot & carrot haven't grown as fast as I thought they would but perhaps thats me being impatient! they germinated quickly but just seemed to have sat there not doing a lot since!

Spring onion, I've grown three types purplette which was the first to germinate followed by Toga & White lisbon, growing ok & now just needs to fatten up,

Radish Mooli Mino germinated in 48hrs & growing very quickly, a good 3" high even though only sown17days ago,

Lettuce Little Gem & Salad Bowl, slow to germinate (9 days) but cropping commenced at just 3 weeks!

Lambs Lettuce growing slowly & should be ready in a week or two, so harvest would be 6/7 weeks,

Pea Oregon Sugar pod, grown for shoots rather than peas, growing faster than i can eat so surplus being given to chickens!

Kale, cavelo nero type, cropping commenced in 4 weeks, not as quickly growing as the lettuce but not far behind,

"Water"cress slowly growing, at least another 2/3 weeks before cropping I would think,

All in all I don't think I would bother growing root crops in it again & would concentrated on salad leaves instead, no problems with slugs/snails although I have put a strip of copper tape along the entire outside of the trug just in case, I may plant a few dwarf french beans along the outside so that they can drape over the sides allowiing for easy picking,

Really pleased with it at the end of the day!

    It sounds great.

I'm struggling to imagine a trug type thing that big, do you have any links to where you bought it or any pictures? Is it raised, if so I wonder if it would be good for keeping the other pest (my dog!) off my crops!

Root crops are the one thing I never have much luck with in containers, but I don't know what depth of soil you have in this trug.

My beetroot's not coming to much yet either, probably because the birds keep eating all the foiliage & now the swiss chard leaves too. Grrr.

I was hoping it would be something raised like that, yours is more the size I'd want though, is yours all one or do you have more put together?

Ah yes, above leg cocking height would be good, although about muzzle height even better as my husky seems to like some veg nearly as much as meat!

It looks like really easy gardening for my back too, I love the idea & it must help with some pests too.

    Hi

No its one big bed 2m long x 75cm wide x 80cm high

if I remember right it took around 6/7 bags of compost to fill (75ltrs)

We do have a lot of birds around here so I kept a piece of fleece over it for around 3 weeks using 3 cheap metal hoops & tying each end of the fleece into a knot, did the trick!

A trug is a carrying thing, are you not talking about a swill? Cheers, Tony.

The one in the link is branded as a veg trug, the one I have is called a veg table as I have just discovered, I dare say all the other makes will be generalised with the veg trug name too!

Its a bit like saying you are going to do the hoovering even though you own a dyson !!!!!!!!!!!

    Is it one of these:

I like the way it has deep & shallow areas for growing different things. I'm very tempted by something like that.

It would be fairly easy to make covers for too, although they seem to sell some great ones.
