I've never owned a fruit tree, but over the years I have heard and read snippets that seem to point to the Early Rivers Plum.

That Robin Page farmer chappy in the weekend Telegraph had enjoyed them, the last of about 18 - 20 snippets.

We've a small medium garden, south facing on heavy clay soil. In winter rain runs off with nowhere to go, in summer it cracks.

Ideas or help anyone, I just cut the grass and dont really know gardening

    Hello. Molls

Yes, Early Rivers is an excellent plum that has been around since 1820 and I would recommend it. The only problem is that it isn't self-fertile, which means you will need to plant a companion tree, unless you live near an orchard.

Perhaps you will find something to your liking here, paying attention to those that are self-fertile:

Your soil will be fine for any type of plum tree; you'll just need to deep dig & enrich it with compost at planting time.
