My runners are now at the top of their canes and are well in flower. They look great but for first time I have grown some in a large tub rather than directly into the ground. They all at present look at the same stage and doing fab. My concern is should I feed the ones in tub's and if so what with? I have always grown beans and done well however never fed them or anything I am just lucky with them I suppose. So is there a specific feed for beans? Has anyone grown in tubs? Suggestions - I love beans and need to stock freezer so want as many as possible. I grew in tubs as I am of ill health and was unable to prepare to much of my huge veggie plot as I would have liked.

Hi Sarcass - I always grow my beans in large pots due to lack of space. I don't know if it's correct, but once in flower, I give mine an occasional feed of tomorite or similar tomato feed, I also spray over flowers when watering to aid bean development. I do well with them every year - this year they are nearly at top of canes, but no flowers yet, although broad beans are full of blooms. Nan x

Thanks Nan sounds like you have success in tubs with a technique that works so sounds good to me.

No prizes for the first runner beans to reach the top of the canes.

I pick the tops out of mine when they are about 18 inches tall so that they produce more shoots, and do not reach the top as quickly.

When they reach the top, they tend to form a tangled mass, which makes it difficult to find all of the beans to pick, and if you miss some and the beans ripen, then the plant produces no more beans.

With regard giving a feed. Tomato feed, once a fortnight, when the plants are in flower. No need for a nitrogen feed as the roots produce their own.

I wasnt looking for a prize for getting my beans to the top of the canes as I did that ages ago I was looking for advice on feeding those in pots. I also pinch the tops out did that some time ago as well. There are beans already forming and I want to ensure I get a good crop. I am unwell so cant dig so thought pots a good way of maintaining my interest. I have taken advise from Nan regarding feeding and think it way to go so thanks both and all xx
