good day to each, the bug spray i have bought turned my french beans yellow, they did say this could happen,is it possible that i could spray the ground around the plants rather than the plant itself as my french beans look like they are dying off,i know this sounds a silly question but just thought that i would ask,if anyone uses a spray which really does the job please tell me which one please, kind regards Chris
It would depend I think on which bugs you have. Personally I don't see the point of GYO & then spraying them with chemicals (assuming it is a chemical one). There are several home made sprays that work.
thank you the2jays ,do you think a garlic spray would work,i/e heat some water infuse the garlic then spray onto the plants, just a thought, kind regards Chris
What bugs are you spraying against and do you reallly want to eat veggies full of chemicals? I never spray but I do use friendly critters to help control pests such as aphids and caterpillars.
Hanging bird feeders all year round encourages adult birds to come and feed and they will then nest nearby if they can. Once they have young, they get their own food from the feeders and then hoover up all the juicy aphids and caterpilllars for their chicks. Once they fledge, they teach them how to use your feeders and forage for insects and the cycle continues.
Ladybirds and hoverflies also eat a lot of pests but are killed by chemical sprays. As aphids' breeding cycles mean they recover faster you soon get an imbalance and a problem.
I plant chives and alliums near susceptible plants to deter ants and aphids and I expect a garlic spray would work too. Pouring one small bottle of essential oil of cloves diluted in a 10litre can of water around plants with boths ants and aphids pestering them makes the ants go away so predators can get to the aphids, or you could just put down ant traps with chemicals to kill them.
thanks Obelixx, its been taken on board,we do have bird feeders, its just as its only my 2nd year of growing my own i thought i would get some sound advice which thankfully you have given, kind regards Chris
Good luck. There's loads of experienced people on here to offer advice. If the aphids seem too numerous for natural predators to deal with you can always blast them off with a squirt from a hose pipe. It also helps to plant flowering plants such as marigolds and poached egg plants to attract pollinators and friendly bugs.
Gave up using bought sprays yonks ago after concluding that using them did more for the manufacturers' profits than they did for my veg. Yes, I get aphids, but I get ladybirds, too.
