anyone given it a go? i see some golden virginia plants for sale. what is the end result like?
It's perfectly possible but the moment it's prepared for smoking (ie the cured leaves are shredded) duty is due to HM Revenue & Customs.
Growing your own isn't a prob, don't know if they is a specific quantity before paying tax. Grandad used to during the war, but he was made to sit outside as it was very smelly. You can only grow for personal use.
I`ve never grown it, but when I went to Bulgaria some years ago, a lot of the houses had tobacco leaves strung up in rows drying on the whitewashed walls.
Made me smile because I wondered what it was at first.
I thought they were kippers!
You may also exchange it without value as much as you like, until C+E become aware; an extension of personal use.
The same applies to alcohol distillation in practice.
