I'm really loving this growing your own veg!

    Thanks to any replies

Sounds like you may be watering them too much, I should give it a day off. Overwatering may cause them to rot. Cheers, Tony.

Yes as Tony says you're watering them too much. Two or three times a week is suffice. I planted mine the week before and they are about 1 inch high. You'll probably need to thin them out when they get a bit bigger. Good luck, they're one of my favourites too!

I'm not sure I'll be eating any of mine, it's the first time I've tried them in the ground & the birds are eating every last bit of foliage. Just bare stems. They've bravely re-grown only to be eaten again!

I don't really want to net as it's more of an ornamental potager type flower/veg border.

I'm still trying to come up with a solution. Canes around them aren't doing anything either.

Be interesting to see if anyone else has the same problem.

Maybe you could try sowing them in modules then popping them in when they're a bit bigger. Some people say that they don't transplant well, but I've never had a problem if 1) you use a decent sized module & 2) don't leave them too long.

    Hi Tony,

Thanks for your advice - I probably have over watered them as I'm out every evening watering them I should leave them until next week!

    Thanks

    Hello:

Your not on your own, I am having the same problem, beetroots been pecked to peices! Sorry can't really suggest anything if you don't want to cover, might consider putting fleece over to protect, never seen it this bad before, people have had their runner beans eaten, my unripe white currants have been eaten too!

    Arrrggghhhhh!

My father came up with an interesting solution which also works for cats:

He took a reel of black cotton and screwed it to a piece of dowel about two foot long. On the end of the dowel (opposite end to which he would be holding) he'd nail in a pointed staple through which the tread would run. He would then push a large number of short canes into the seed bed, tying the end of the cotton thread to one and then pass the tread from one cane to another, wrapping it round and onto another creating a black web above the crop. You can hardly see this web but it works as a great deterrent.

I've managed to stop pigeons and also the local cat from using my beds as a toilet; it now does it on the lawn!

    Hope this helps.

    Hi
You could try boiling 4 or 5 bulbs of garlic in a pint of water for a while, outside preferably, dilute concentrate a bit and use as a foliar spray. Do the plants some good and maybe keep the birds off too.
