This is first year i am growing cucumbers!! The plants are about 6 inches tall. Do they need sticks? How many do you get per plant? I have done about 15 plants! They are all in pots now.
You don't say if they are ridge cucs, or all femail, are in a greenhouse or outside, and what size pots they are in.
Do you have a greenhouse?
More info, please.
Dunno what type there that's a problem. They are in big black pots! I have most in a glass greenhouse and also have a couple outside!
Hi Katy,
Unless you intend to supply the neighbourhood, 15 plants are more than enough .
One or two should keep you/family going all summer lol.
As reguards type,
Female flowers will show the very small fruit just behind the flower head, male flowers wil have no fruit behind and should be removed (tend to make fruits tast bitter apparently) .
If you have an all female plant, then there is (obviously) no need to remove the male flower, so in that respect is a bit easier to manage, at least worry about.
Thank you. How can you tell if its male or female. Never grown them so really don't know how to tell. Do the plants need sticks? Thanks
Wait till it flowers then you will be able to tell (see previous advice)- you will need to support them as plant and fruit grows
Hi
One other thing to do to concentrate energy of plant and prevent a tangle is to remove any side tendrils, a bit like those that help sweet peas and peas climb.
I usually loosely tie main stem to a bamboo cane which rests on a long thin piece of wood which is screwed into inside of wooden greenhouse.
Enjoy when the time comes

I would support them so that they climb. As you do not know the variety, it is possible that they could be a long cucumber, not a short, stubby one, and so by having where the fruit hang down, they will be straight.
