Watched GW on Fri and MD had something like 60+ tomato plants is it just me or is that a wee bit OTT. I only have two well grown and another couple that are a bit smaller. I don't remember my father growing any more than 6 -or maybe 8, so I just wonderd what how many other people are growing.

I have 8 shirley's, around 20 hanging 100's and 1000's - although I do actually have around 40 spare as over sowed them smiley - smiley and I also have around 6 unknown tall toms. In amongst my tumblers which I bought from DT Brown I seem to have a few odd bods. I sowed the seeds as instructed and they are certainly different to the others so I have decided to see what happens with those and potted them up. At present they are in greenhouse as unsure where they would be happiest lol

I have about 20, some Shirley F1, Alicante, Marmande and Roma. I don't know where they'll all go when they reach full size as I have 15 Aubergines and 5 Chillis- 2 Cayenne, 2 Apache and 1 Scotch Bonnet all competing for space in my 8' x 6' greenhouse.

I devote a whole raised bed two or three varieties (ten plants) out of three 10' x 4' beds plus four 100s & 1000s plants in pots.

Tomatoes are so versatile a veg in the kitchen and can be stored in so many ways as well.......

.........and there is something extra satisfying in growing them, the look of them, the colour etc.......more than a cabbage say smiley - smiley

    I hope I don't get blight smiley - sadface

I always sow more than I actually raise into adult plants. I usually end up with about 10, maybe 12, tomato plants at the most, which gives me as many tomatoes as we can cope with. I don't know what Monty and Mrs Monty are planning to do with the fruits of 60 or 70 plants, it gives me a headache just thinking about it. It's not like they don't grow anything else, so presumably they're also coping with huge quantities of other fruit and veg all summer and autumn long. You can only eat so much produce, and all the rest has to be processed somehow in order to store it (cleaning, chopping, peeling, blanching, cooking, preserving).

Or maybe they delegate some of the work to staff, which is not an option most of us have.

    Hiya

I have grown three varieties from seed - Roma, Gardeners Delight and Tamina, as well as 3 Bulls Heart which I was given.

I have already planted about 8 of each of my ones in my plot, and need to make some room for the 3 Bulls Heart.

Last year I grew 3 each of Roma, G.Delight and another funny shaped one in 3 growbags, but they kept getting so dry I thought I would try them in the ground.

They look nice strong sturdy plants this year so I am hopeful of getting enough to process and store again this year. Last year there was enough for plenty of tomato chutney and tomato jelly! Nice!

Many years ago (1970's) when I first started growing tomatoes, in my father's greenhouse and our unlounge I grew a few of the normal varieties at the time

    Big Boy
    Alicante
    Craigella
    Tigerella
    Golden Sunrise
    Moneymaker
    the Amateur
    Sweet 100

The sweet 100 turned out to be the most popular .. my late Uncle when he visited would pluck off the cherry tomatoes and pop in his mouth all the time.

I had to look up the T&M website for a list of names to remember them all.

I think the variety Shirley, which I am growing this year was just coming out when I left home

Like others here, I'm growing a lot! However, I have had trouble with leaf-spot when cramming too many in the greenhouse. Doing this leads to high humidity and toms like low humidity. It all depends on the weather really - a hot summer, excellent ventilation (crucial) and all is usually well. I also have about 20 plants in pots which are put wherever there is a spare sunny spot, so even in a bad year (eg when blight strikes), there are always enough survivors to ensure the freezer gets full of sauce-base for the Winter!
    Cheers -- Bob

I only have a small greenhouse & find they often don't do so well outside unless we have a very sunny summer.

So I have one gardener's delight which will soon go out in a plastic pot cover, 2 maskotka in baskets (worryingly long stem for a container one!) & in the greenhouse one more of the last, plus a tumbling tom.

I hope they will be enough for the two of us, I don't have a big freezer though, so it's more for as many as we can cook with or eat while they're still growing.

I grow mine in pots on the patio. Usually a mixture of gardeners delight & sweet olive but this year I am growing some alicante as well (free seeds with Lakeland catalogue). This year it is 7 GD, 6 SO and 4 alicante. My GD have flowers already, which is earlier than usual.
