I need to add some compost to the soil where I intend to plant my tomatoes. I only have mushroon compost available at the moment. I seem to remember someone saying that it shouldn't be used on the ground for potatoes. Does this apply to tomatoes too?
Mushroom compost often has a very high pH, and potatoes prefer a low pH. That, probably, is why it's not a good idea to use mushroom compost om potatoes.
I wish I knew if tomatoes were the same! - any information would be very helpful.
Thanks, Lottie
Tomatoes grow best in a slightly acid soil with a pH of somewhere between about 6 and 6.8, so mushroom compost may not be a good idea. The plants will grow in a wide range of pH values though, so it's not critical.
