Here we are, almost at the end of May, the tomatoes and runner beans planted, and tonight there's a frost warning. Up in the frozen north? No, in southern Surrey. Out goes the fleece, m'thinks.

I checked on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú weather and they say 9 centigrade over night in my part of west London yet predict a 'grass' frost in rural areas...hmmm what to do.

At 9C you should be OK. The forecast here is 6C. That's the urban temperature while our garden in the outskirts is typically 2C lower. That would make the ground temperature around 0!

I have very little of my stuff planted out for this very reason.

I have lost plants to frost as late as the 31st May before today!

Similarly I lost loads of Dahlias one year on the 2nd June in a hail storm a few years back.

So now I work to the calendar & my diaries rather than current weather projections!

We had a cold night yesterday, not sure how cold but one of the virtues of having stuff in pots means they can be brought under shelter and I have other less hardy veg covered with cloches which can have their sides taken down during the day.

My sweet corn though had to take it's chances.

Just for the record, the forecast was right and last night in our garden the minimum air temperature was 3.5C. The ground temperature would have been round 0C. The tomatoes were protected with fleece and came through unharmed. The hardier beans and courgettes survived without protection.

I'm very fortunate with the weather. I live in a terraced house which backs onto a raised school playground and other buildings which are very good windbreaks.
The effect is I have a walled garden which is also in a great sunny position. The only plants I took indoors were newly acquired chillis, Scotch Bonnet and Tabasco. My broad beans are showing a number of fruits which will be on the table by the end of the month (hopefully).
