In spring my rhubarb bed was full of lovely strong plants and lots of thick stems. I picked some stems from each plant. Since picking them we have had no rain although we have watered them most days. The new stems have been thin and have just flopped to the ground. The stems are quite hollow and weak. It has been very windy so i do not know if this is the reason. Most of the stems are lying on the bed and the leaves have gone yellow. I cannot beleive that the plants have deteriorated so badly, Has anyone else had this and do you know the reason is it lack of rain or the wind or something else the plants are well established before this happened and they get plenty of compost each year.

Same thing has happened to mine this year and I've never had any problems with growing rubarb.

I've an old crown which never fails, at the start of this year the stems were huge but it's looking very sad at present.

Two newer crowns, 2 -3 years old never really took off this year .One I forced so did get some stems but since picking them it hasn't grown anything worth picking.

Sorry that doesn't help you but It will be interesting to read further replies.

In my part of the country it has rained nearly every day since Easter. Rain is a tab bit of a sore point for us this part of Lancashire, last year it rained everyday bar two during the hose pipe ban.

I also dug over the part of the veg garden which has my rubarb crowns on last weekend and there's certainly no shortage of moisture in the soil.

    Farmer Steve

I do not understand your reply. I clearly said i had not had rain but i had been watering the plants. I was just asking for some help. I have had rhubarb for many years the plants are established but this is the first year this has happened.
