Is it worth setting aside space on a standard size allotment to permanent beds? I'm aiming for variety more than loads of potatoes, onions and beans and can grow salad crops in the garden greenhouse
There's no straight answer to this - it depends on how much you love asparagus! Sounds as if it would be a good idea to sit down and work out a plan for your allotment - decide how many potatoes, carrots, onions or whatever you want every year, what kind of beds you should have to allow for rotation, and then decide if you have enough room for an asparagus bed
It might also be important to think about how long you're likely to have the allotment for - there's be no point in putting in a bed if you're going to move in the next couple of years
Hi AST.
I agree with whats been said ref growing anything,
Ask yourself just one question (what do i like to eat fresh)
Asparagus is a perminant plant and takes years to get to the stage of regular supply,
If your thinging of having rhubarb ?? Then you can grow the asparagus near to it as they are both long term supply plants.
I'd go for it , I've had an allotment for over a decade , about a third is long term planting. An apple tree , a plum , currants , raspberries and artichokes. I didn't plant an asparagus bed until two years ago and this year I've made a few cuttings. I did plant 20 crowns , I hope next year to be able to take a couple of cuttings a week for well over a month.
