I've ordered some enviromesh which is due to arrive mon/tues but I really want to get the carrot seeds in over the weekend, am I right in thinking that the carrot fly is only going to lay eggs on the emerging seedlings? so the seeds will be safe until they germinate?
Yes-it is the foliage they are attracted to .

The smell of carrots seems to be the catalyst that gets the beggers going. Sowing thinly so less need to thin the crop and hence less carroty smells drifting on the wind should keep them in the dark! Cheers, Tony.
I would wait until it arrives. A couple of days wont make any difference. I cover with fleece when I sow
