Well, there's certainly been a North South split this month.
It's rained nearly every day up here in North Yorkshire and I've forgotten what the sun looks like,6 inches of rain in a fortnight and constant 20mph+ Westerly winds....
Anyway I took a load of photos and did a 2 minute slideshow of how things stand up North with me at the end of May.

    Sunshine please !!

Here in south Devon, we haven't had a proper fall of rain for at least a month. Bands of light showers seem to float over the weather-map just missing the south west corner. The water butts are empty and we have the hosepipe on every 2 or 3 days, just to keep all the new plants and transplants alive, and keep the soft fruits and beans and peas developing.

The last few days we've had horizontal drizzly dampness swirling around, with clouds and strong winds, but nothing that leaves any water at the bottom of a bucket left outside. They are promising us heavy rain tomorrow, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they change the forecast soon, as say it isn't coming until Thursday or something.

This is really strange, because it's "Devon, lovely Devon, where it rains eight days out of seven"

So I am turning into a real grumpy gardener, hoping for rain, even though I know it will spoil people's Bank holiday!

We are in the East Midlands, and my son is in East Anglia and for both of us the ground of our gardens are dust bowls. There have been a few very slight showers, doing more harm than good as they encourage surface roots. I pulled up a chickweed yesterday, its tiny roots were just in dust below 1/8th of an inch of slightly damp soil.

I grow all sorts of things in hundreds of pots and containers and am finding life very difficult at present. It is very windy today and very cold for the time of year, yet I shall have to wrap up and get out to water some things. I suppose we will just have to get on with it, no way of changing it that is for sure.

Have been reading a garden diary book set over the last century or so, entries form various areas of the UK, nothing really seems to have changed - cold Junes, hot Aprils, glorious summers, miserable failures - the variety just comes of living here I guess!

Amazing what a bit of water coupled with not a little skill can do. That blue iris is absolutely exquisite. What variety is it?

well its just started to rain here in the N/E on bank holiday monday its the 1st we have had for a while much needed, all we have had is that blasted wind, could do with some more sunshine as well, but like everyone else we will work through it im sure all will turn out well in the end (FINGERS CROSSED) just watched a short video about a natural pesticide using garlic, the recipe is a couple of garlic bulbs, half pint of hot water, place into a blender whiz for 2 mins, pour into a 2 ltr bottle then top up with 1 and a half pints of hot water, leave for a couple of days, then strain through muslin or fine strainer, this is then diluted to a 10 to 1 mix,you can use it on most plants apparently even keeps slugs and snails off, i will definately be trying this, kind regards Chris

I said earlier that we'd been forecast to have much-needed heavy rain today in south Devon. I was getting quite excited about it. Honestlyl, I dream of rain!

But not a drop. There may have been a light shower last night, but all we've had today is a sort of mizzly low cloud, and now they've changed the forecast and there's still no rain forecast up to Friday.

Plants are still thirsty, water butts still empty. If you're getting rain, be thankful!
