dad got some roooster potatos filled a pot up to the top and put them in, the leaves are growing through, but im sure he;s done it all wrond, as i read about earthing up, should they have been put near bottom of pot instead and then soil added as they grow?
dd
You are right that is the correct way to do it but too late now - how big is this pot and how many did he put in?
Geoff
its quite a large pot, think he put three in it
dd
The idea is you earth up to protect from frost, stops exposing the potatoes to light and increases yield.
You say quite a large pot- really you have two choices- leave them where they are or put this pot inside an even larger pot and then add soil gradually- do not tip out!
You should get something whatever you do.
Geoff
thanks was worried we'd get poisoned
dd
You could put the pot inside a strong black bag Then fill around the pot with soil and cover the pot as the plant gets taller. This may help more potatoes to grow and stop light getting to the potatoes. If light does get to them they will go green and then you will not be able to eat them as green potatoes are poisonous.
ok thankyou, i have seen in B&M large potato grow bags, maybe one of them will fit, although it is a large pot, up to now no potatos are showing through the soil
