I grow mostly bush tomatoes, but this year I have a couple of Gardener's Delight and one plant of Sungold, which are grown as cordons. It's a while since I've grown cordons and I'm not quite sure what to do.
I've planted them in an outdoor bed now and they are beginning to flower. I notice that they (particularly the Sungold) are putting up new shoots from the base. Now, I know that I have to pinch out the side shoots as they appear further up the stem but what should I do about this new growth at the base of the plant? Leave it, pluck it out, or wait until further new shoots appear at the joints and just pinch them out?
Nip off the new shoots appearing at the base, and only nip off the side shoots that grow between the stem and a leaf.
Extra roots may grow from the stem near the ground, you can cover these with soil/compost. Cheers, Tony.
It is probably a shoot growing from a leaf joint where the leaf has been taken off-remove it as you do all other sideshoots when growing as cordons.

Remove it!
Now you see it;
Now you don't;
Thanks, one and all, I think I know what I'm doing now. Haven't been able to access your links yet, Tee Gee, but will do so when I can.
All I need now is some rain and then my tomatoes may get a wiggle on!
