I was tying it in and the top came off smiley - doh. It's snapped about one set of leaves down from the top. I was gutted.

It was my tallest cordon and is about 2ft high with good growth but only one set of flowers. Should I just dig it up and put it on the compost heapsmiley - sadface

Is it to late to replace it with a back up. I have some yellow pear sown on 17th April but as you can imagine these are only tiny and have only just been potted up from seedlings.

Don' t dig it up let a side shoot take over as the growing tip.

Then just treat it as you would have done normally with a cordon I.e. Remove the side shoots!

If I undrstand you correctly, there are leaves left on the rooted plant? If so, it will produce side shoots and keep going for you - pick one as an alternative leader. If you want a laugh, you can also try rooting the broken bit in water - they sometimes take.

Not only will you not lose your original plant, you've got another as well!

Just plant the top that snapped off as deeply as you can. It'll grow roots and grow into another plant. It'll be the same 'age' as your original plant, so will try to flower at the same time.

    Two for one!

I was hoping you would reply TeeGee and say I could leave it in to grow off a side shoot. It's in th GH bed in a bottomless pot so getting it out wouldn't be too difficult but planting another plant would have proved harder without damaging something else.

Yes, AlinaW it does have leaves left on the rooted plant. I've already nipped off side shoots so it could be a while before any more show but I'm patient.

And whatalottie. I tried replanting some side shoots at the weekend, no joy though they were wilting within hours but interesting to know if any do take they will flower at the same time as the original plant.
