I read in the last issue of GW that you should prune grapevines branches that are fruiting. The advice was to cut off the growth after one leaf above the bunch. I thought this would cause the vine to bleed and open it for attack by god know what lurks in the garden. Mine is now two years old and seems to be planning to fruit quite well
GW knows the subject and wouldn't print duff advice- have a look at this website from rhs- confirms it - sometimes it is ok to trust the "expert"!!
Good luck

I hacked back my grapevine today. I think it's called 'effleurage', by this time the sap should have stopped pumping through so bleeding not a problem. I must admit that the hack was more to do with letting in more light to one of my veg patches rather than optimising grape production.
I've always done two leaves after the fruit bunch and I've just read the RHS site
carefully that dogcody gave and that is what they suggest too.
You take back any side shoots that grow after this to one leaf.
Is it any use doing this if the stems have already grown quite a bit after producing the bunches? The branches have several leaves after the fruits. Should the none fruit bearing ones be cut back too?
my vine is 5 years old I do get small grapes on it but i really would like to know how to encourage the grapes to swell more
and therefore be much sweeter
any advice would be useful
